Australia and South Africa produced a thriller in the 3rd T20I at Cairns where Glenn Maxwell turned saviour with a breathtaking unbeaten 62 off 36 balls.
Chasing 173, Australia looked in deep trouble after a middle-order collapse despite a solid start from captain Mitchell Marsh who scored 54. South Africa’s bowlers, including Corbin Bosch and Kagiso Rabada, kept striking at crucial stages, putting the game on edge.
Earlier, Dewald Brevis lit up the night with a stunning half-century off just 22 balls, smashing four sixes in an over and guiding South Africa to a competitive 172/7.
His fireworks, however, were cut short by a superb running catch from Maxwell himself, proving his all-round impact. The chase came down to the final over with Australia needing 10 runs off six balls against Lungi Ngidi.
Maxwell, calm under immense pressure, struck a six early in the over and sealed the victory with a trademark reverse sweep for four with one ball to spare, sparking wild celebrations.
The win not only gave Australia the match but also the series 2–1, making it a historic night at Cazalys Stadium, which was hosting its first-ever T20 international. In a game full of twists, Maxwell’s finishing heroics stood out as the defining moment that reminded the cricketing world why he is called “The Big Show.”
